What an exciting two days! Once again this year, we were there at full power at the metering days. Around 1,200 visitors, 78 speakers, and 86 exhibiting companies made the event a hotspot for smart metering, digitalization, and the future of the energy industry, and our team was right in the middle of it all.
During intensive discussions with experts, innovators, and thought leaders in the field of energy future, we were able to gain numerous insights and also present our software solutions. Once again this year, our CEO Dr. Thomas Goette was on the stage with the question: „Pflichtvisu – Kenne mer nit, bruche mer nit, fott domet? “
His statement on the event and the current situation with the smart meter rollout:
"The fact that over 260 network operators involved in the smart meter rollout in Germany do not yet have a single gateway in the field is the result of a lack of clearly defined consequences. The interaction between the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) as the legislator and the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) as the regulator does not work if those being regulated are not clear about what will happen if they do not meet the 20 percent quota, i.e., if they “run a red light,” so to speak.
Raising your hands to the sky as a BMWE representative and pleading, “Please talk to us,” does not solve any problems. The smart grid in Germany will remain dysfunctional if there is a patchwork quilt of rollouts. There is a lack of rules and incentives here - just like with small children.
The same applies to the interaction between basic and competitive metering point operators. And this applies in both directions. Wanting to remove one (wMSB) from the equation in order to restore “calm to the grid” does not serve competition, innovation, or the rollout dynamic as a whole. Clear responsibilities and clear consequences would help. The BMWE and the BNetzA can obviously take corrective action on both counts, but please do so pragmatically and in a solution-oriented manner."
This makes it all the more important to continue driving forward topics such as intelligent metering systems, smart grids, and digital innovations. And this year, too, important impulses was provided at the metering days.
A big thank you to ZVEI Services for organizing this exciting event every year. We are taking away a lot of energy and inspiration and are already looking forward to the metering days 2026 and the coming developments in the energy industry!⚡
