In March, the final meeting of the “Smart Metering in SMEs” project of the Virtual Institute Smart Energy (VISE) took place on the premises of TH Köln. At the beginning of 2022, an interdisciplinary consortium, including GreenPocket, began to address the question “What added value do smart energy metering systems provide for small and medium-sized enterprises?”.
The aim was to enable small and medium-sized enterprises in North Rhine-Westphalia to benefit from new value-added services across the board and thus contribute to national climate protection targets. The research project led by TH Köln ran for justover three years. In addition to TH Köln and GreenPocket GmbH, the partners in the project were the Association for the Conservative Use of Energy and Water(ASEW), Ruhr University Bochum, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy gGmbH. The project was funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia.
GreenPocket provided the technical platform. The software was intensively tested, structured in terms of features and narrowed down to a range of functions that made sense for the applicationtest. A total of 20 SMEs were able to take part in the application tests. Before the software was made available to the companies, qualitative interviews were conducted in order to record expectations, knowledge and relevant operating data and then adapt the software with regard to the test phase. During the usage phase, the SMEs were scientifically monitored and received individual feedback on their electricity consumption. The feedback was displayed on the dashboard of the energy management software with the help of communication and info boxes.
Over the course of the project, the project was presented and discussed in numerous formats (thematic webinars, presentations at expert panels, VISE annual conference, etc.) in order to involve stakeholders and analyze the scope of services. A total of almost 400 participants took part in the events and provided valuable specialist input. Furthermore, a survey was conducted and various student theses were written on the project. A digital training series was also developed, which is aimed specifically at small and medium-sized enterprisesand provides practical information on how companies can analyse and optimize their energy consumption.
The video series consists of three multi-partmodules:
Module 1 provides the basics of energy efficiency and energy managementin companies as well as general information on energy consumption in SMEs. Module 2 provides valuable information on smart meters and mobile measurement technology for recording electricity consumption, the evaluation of recorded energy data based on load profiles and a step-by-step plan for implementationin your own company. The final Module 3 deals with the concrete implementation in practice and thus the presentation of practical examples and best practices, such as the GreenPocket software solution for the visualizationof electricity consumption data and potentials for the use of mobile measurement technology.
We were able to learn a lot from the research project and are constantly working on incorporating the valuable output and wishes of the SMEs into our product development. A big thank you once again to all the project partners for the excellent collaboration - we are delighted to have been a part of it and hopeto be able to implement more exciting projects together in the future!
