Two tough years for the energy and metering industry: not only could no metering days take place for two years due to corona, but the rollout was also delayed further and further, most recently because of the Russian war, the resulting energy and gas crisis and the chip shortage. But now our three colleagues are back from this year's metering days in high spirits, because: The rollout is progressing and something is happening in the industry!
There are currently around 250,000 smart meter gateways installed, but the manufacturers' announcement is clear: this number is set to at least triple by 2023! There are no longer any shortages in the supply of chips and the industry is counting on the Metering Point Operation Act (MsbG) being amended.
In his presentation, Andreas Kuhlmann, head of dena, also emphasised that the rollout must be accelerated and streamlined. Most importantly, it should be driven by clear benefits — as this is the only way all stakeholders can work together effectively and contribute to a digitalised infrastructure, and ultimately, to the energy transition.
Other hot topics at the metering days included the HKVO, submetering, and the integration of multiple meters into a single gateway to ensure all consumption data is equally accessible and transparent. Also discussed was the use of CLS boxes for control purposes — a step toward creating a ‘climate-neutral grid’ in the future, according to Dietmar Reuter from PwC. This latter goal presents a particular challenge for distribution grid operators, who are taking on an entirely new role in the energy market through system monitoring and control.
GreenPocket - as a visualisation specialist - also plays an important role in all of these issues: because it is only through the visualisation and management of consumption and grid statuses that a change can ultimately be achieved.
So, what happens next? Our CEO, Dr Thomas Goette, got the latest insights straight from the source in Berlin, just a week after the metering days. At the event on 20 October — “A New Start for the Smart Meter Rollout: Moving Towards a Digital Energy System” — hosted by dena’s Future Energy Lab, Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Dr Robert Habeck, personally shared the government's plans to accelerate the rollout and revise the Metering Point Operation Act (MsbG). We’re excited about what’s ahead!
To summarise, the Metering Days were a complete success for GreenPocket - exciting market insights and two days full of interesting discussions. Many thanks to ZVEI Services for the great organisation! See you again next year from 17 - 18 October in Fulda!
